Proclaiming April 22, 2012 to be "Windows on Our Past - Looking to Our Future Day," in honor of Hamline Church United Methodist's placement on the National Register of Historic Places.

WHEREAS, Hamline Church United Methodist got its start in 1880, when worship began in the chapel at Hamline University; and
WHEREAS, the church was incorporated in 1885 and dedicated its first building in 1900, but lost that building in a fire in 1925; and
WHEREAS, the current church building was built in 1926-1928, in a Gothic style. It was dedicated on April 1, 1928; and
WHEREAS, the church has many striking features, including hand carvings and gargoyles as spire downspouts; and
WHEREAS, the church windows are among its finest features. Although designed as a set, the windows were created over a period of many years, beginning in the 1920s and ending in the 1960s; and
WHEREAS; four of the largest windows tell the story of Christ's life; and
WHEREAS, the story of the windows is also a story of Minnesota's history and the story of many people in the church; and
WHEREAS, Hamline Church was recently named to the National Register of Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, the designation shows that Hamline Church United Methodist cares about its building as a community and statewide asset, and sees value in its preservation; and
WHEREAS, the congregation has a strong sense of history, with its roots in half a dozen historic St. Paul and Minnesota Methodist churches, including the Market Street Methodist Church, which was founded in 1848; and
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council proclaims April 22, 2012, to be celebrated as "Windows on Our Past - Looking to Our Future Day," in honor of Hamline Church United Methodist's place on the National Register of Historic Places.
